Tonight, Friday, September 28: Animal Happening &035;4: The Zodiac
“Are you that zodiac freak i’ve been lookin’ for?”
- Tyrese, “Signs of Love Makin’”
Aries,… Taurus,… Gemini,… Cancer,… Leo,… Virgo,… Libra,… Scorpio,… Saggitarius,… Capricorn,… Pisces…
The theme of this month’s Animal Train Happening, the Zodiac, or, entomologically, “circle of animals,” indicates that we expect all the symbolic creatures, stars, and planets to proudly and harmonically represent at the Glasslands Friday September 28. While the Social Registry’s recently-reformed and legendary Ghost Exits detonate their trademark cosmic post-postmodern no-wave booty blast, guest DJ
Brian DeGraw, of Gang Gang Dance, Sway, cinema, and general international art stardom, pulls a spiral of the celestial to our raw(war) terrestrial sphere, beheading genre constraints with his eclectically ecliptic mix. Cult occult filmmaker/performance artist Micki Pellerano screens a short film, go go dancers the Marmaladies (Golden Triangle front-women Vashti and Carli) gyrate cycles of other-worldy get-down, the mysterious Bruno sees what’s in your cards (Tarot, that is), Mighty Robot AV Crew coats the walls with their breathtaking layers of planetary projections, the fine artistes of Live With Animals generate the physical environment, and
Ivan Sunshine of Vietnam’s glowing swarms of disco light orbit the room. House DJs Eric Z of Secret Project Robot and Jonathan Toubin of New York Night Train conjure a holy mountain of horoscopic hits by everyone from Blowfly to Harvey Sid Fisher to Danny Pearson, who, in morphing an eternal question into an iconic 1978 soul ballad “What’s Your Sign Girl?” asks:
Is it compatible with mine?
The only way to find out is if you show up (early, that is, doors are at 10pm and Ghost Exits play at 11pm sharp!)
A partnership between New York Night Train zine/label and Live With Animals art gallery at Glasslands, Animal Train is DJs, performance, projections, and dance in an entirely informally formalist environment designed, constructed, and lit entirely by local artists. Our event is a deliberate bras d’ honneur in the face of the mediocre, unimaginative, and economically exclusionary day-to-day mechanics of 21st Century New York art, music, and nightlife in general….

Tomorrow, Saturday, Sept 29: New York Night Train proudly presents our first annual Cannibal Feast and Disco. Tonight I’m turning my new culinary passion into a cause for celebration. While the Glasslands’ Brooke Baxter and Rolyn Hu grill one-hundred-and-fifty-pounds of human flesh procured by yours truly (did I mention my landlord went missing?), we’ve assembled a bill to compliment the occasion by some of my favorite bands and DJs for you dining, listening, and dancing pleasure. The performance half of the evening will be headlined by an electrifying electronic dance set by the inimitable Mssr. Kid Congo Powers of Cramps/Gun Club/Bad Seeds fame – a consummate entertainer and legendary musician who should require no introduction. He will be preceded Services, the fractured synth duo consisting of Brazilian bombshell Trztn of the seminal NYC Young God band Flux Information Sciences and daddy Christopher Pravdica of Gunga Den and Supreme Dicks. The duo haven’t been playing locally much of late as they’ve been busier with prestigious gigs like All Tomorrow’s Parties, releasing records with the tres chic A Touch of Class (ATOC) dance label, and recording with producer (New Order, The The, etc.) and percussionist (Swans, Wiseblood, etc.) Roli Mosimann. S-S-S-Spectres, back from their fifteen minutes of controversial blogosphere fame incited by a combination of both theatrical live performances and the New York Night Train EP, Sea Potentia Divina, will lay it down blistering and bizarre as they filter their jagged Contortions-ish jerk groove through heavy Providence deconstruction. Opener Woman, featuring local celebrity Skeleton Boy, fresh off of a successful West Coast jaunt, play their brutal Aussie-ish r’n'r with every bit as darkness as their attire would imply. The DJ Party that follows consists of a battle between White Glove ( supersonic sub-Tonic super-team Maya and Sebastian) and Black Glove (choice selector Jennifer M. Krako of the much-missed mythical Po Nave Nunk Rock DeeJay Show). Bands at 9pm and the free dance party at 1am…
Tomorrow, or, more like tonight, Sept 26: I’m proud to announce that my Motor City guest DJ is noneother than my pal, award-winning filmmaker Eva Aridjis, the prolific auteur behind such works as Taxidermy: The Art of Imitating Life, Billy Twist, Niños de la Calle, The Favor, and, most recently, the killer documentary La Santa Muerte. Closely connected to the rock scene both socially and via her music videos, and a hands-down Wednesday regular, Eva is also a well-known and loved downtown DJ with exquisitely eclectic taste. Expect us to play anything and everything….
New York Night Train is currently curating weekly parties on Wednesdays at Motor City. Not only will you hear the mix of funky obscurities, underground standards, and new experiments that the New York Night Train DJs’ve become known for, but also the unique musical perspective of a different guest DJ from NYC’s underground music community.every week. Past guests include include members of The Cramps, The Gun Club, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Butthole Surfers, TV on the Radio, Make-Up, Excepter, Nation of Ulysses, Vietnam, Sonic Youth, Bad Wizard, Pussy Glaore, and many more.

(btwn Rivington and Delancey)
10pm - 4am
Tomorrow, Sept 27: I hope to be joined by none other than Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad at Club Midway. Since I didn’t bother to invite him perhaps he won’t show… but… I was thinking… he is in town, and, if he sees the ad, what’s stopping him from hitting me with Iran’s finest gay house jams…

Tonight: This epic week starts off with a bang at Motor City Wednesday as me and Nadav from Aa, AKA Big A little a, throw down all kinds of indie nerd stuff and rock yr face off in the process. Nadav’s not only a familiar pretty face around these parts for his exploits as one of the three wise drummers but also knows his shizula as he’s seen almost every band there is as one of the town’s top sound engineers. Motor City lo-fi hi-fi?
Tomorrow I head to cozy Club Midway where, alone in the booth all night long, I’ll am the show. And, as if that wasn’t freaky enough and certainly worth a “step-right-up,” I’ll be playing a chocolate box of assorted vinyl grotesques, mysteries, and what-is-its to educate, entrance, and horrify.
Friday, Ants in Your Pants Dance Party is back at Savalas (look for it every week starting in mid-October) local legend David Sparks himself, he of “Fight for Your Right to Party” video fame, who’s been around the underground scene accumulating piles of all kinds of choice grooves since the 1970s, will be co-helming the rockin’ boat with me. I’ve been asking Sparks for ages to do this - I can hardly believe he’s finally doing it and can’t wait!
Saturday, Glasslands just contacted me last-minute to throw Thee Society for the Soul Party Revival’s third Soul Clap Party and Dance-Off (join the group!)there. Anyone who went to the other soul parties knows that I’m gonna be bustin’ some serious ‘45 dustin’ - soul, funk, maximum r&b, and girl group classics, novelties, and obscurities…They’re giving away free beer from 10 – 11 and offering half of the door to the winner of the midnight contest (you?) – which is gonna be judged by a quirky mélange of neighborhood celebrities. It’s only $2 to get in and get down…
Immediate Upcoming:
Weds, Sept 19: Motor City with guest Nadav of Aa (AKA Big A little a), 10pm-4am, FREE
