by Jonathan

Calling all fools and ghouls! Halloween starts tonight. Either you’re part of the problem or drinking my bloody solution because New York Night Train is now entering its terrible twos. Let me make you wiggle and shake all night long… And creep you out at the same time! OK, that’s what i do every night, but check this out…. FUN…

Fri, Oct 26: Savalas (285 Bedford, Williamsburg): Ants In Yr Pants Dance Party - New York Night Train 2nd Anniversary Hoodang and Monster Mash
New York Night Train turns 2 years old and the Halloween season is inaugurated with an exclusive repertoire of spooky dance floor jams from the most obscure garage, soul, and funk nuggets to the more obvious Thrillers and Monster Mashes to absolute over-abuse of Lord Nonesuch, Misfits, 45 Grave, Cramps, Bauhaus, Screamin’ Jay, and Rocky Erickson catalogs. With special surprise guests. Come wish the train a happy birthday!

Sat, Oct 27, Glasslands (289 Kent, Williamsburg): Animal Train 5: Haunted Hop and Contortion Clambake w/James Chance AKA James White of the Contortions, Ron Ward, and S-S-S-Spectres
Animal Train Happening wouldn’t miss out on throwing a Halloween party - particularly because we’re all about dressing up and creeping people out anyway. We are beyond thrilled that our celebrity DJ this time is noneother than Mr. James Chance himself! That’s right, THEE James Chance, the central figure in No Wave (check out these cool photos), also one of the most important forces in the establishment of the dance punk genre (he pre-dated Gang of Four and made them look like Air Supply), the leader of The Contortions and James White and the Blacks, whose songs I spin more than perhaps any other artist (do any of you know that you’ve gotten down to three seperate studio versions of “Contort Yourself”?. This massive skyscraper in the skyline of subcultural music history (look at his discography!) will be hauling his legendary collection of get-down tunes from the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s - super rare deep cut soul, funk, r&b, and other kinetic rough delights. He’ll also be assisted by noneother than Ron Ward, the drummer for loads of seminal Boston punk bands, best known in NYC for fronting the downtown institution better known as Speedball Baby in the 1990s and currently a the singer for new underground supergroup Five Dollar Priest (ex-Swans, Sonic Youth, Pussy Galore, etc.). You may also recognize Ron from his distinguished work in Seinfeld as Kramer’s stand-in on New York street scenes. Another distinguished New Yorker with nuthin’ but style and taste…New York Night Train’s own s-s-s-spooky and theatrical S-S-S-Spectres, who sound a bit like a more immediate and concise combination of The Contortions and Birthday Party, perform an explosively spastic yet meticulously crafted set of top shelf clairvoyant mumbo jumbo with all the costumes and props! Mighty Robot’s Eric Z, Golden Triangle’s Vashti, and New York Night Train’s Mr. Jonathan Toubin will be throwing down spooky Halloween-themed platters all night long, The Marmaladies, Raul, Micky, and Alix are the gogo dancers, Secret Project Robot is still in charge of the mindblowing projections, and the fine artistes of Live With Animals gallery are in charge of the decor…. Contort yourself one time! Contort yourself two times! Contort yourself three times!… Only $5. All people coming from the giant Brahloween Party (with an incredible bill that includes Knyfe Hits, Dirty Faces, Pterodactyl, and Library on Fire!), down the street at Monster Island (Metropolitan and Kent), a complex of course includes Animal Trainees Live With Animals and Secret Project Robot, get in for only $3… Kent Street’s a flaming jackolantern!

Sun, Oct 28: Beauty Bar (231 E 14th, Manhattan): Zombie Beauty Pageant with guest Misfits judges
NYNT’s soul proprietor finds himself providing the soundtrack to the Halloween take on Beauty Bar’s monthly pageant. Along with the jams and the sexy undead vixens, Bobby Steele himself, from Undead and the Misfits, and Peter Greene from Pulp Fiction are among the judges and Michael T and Burnt Sparks host…

monsterball.jpgTue, Oct 30 (9pm - 2am): Union Pool (484 Union, Williamsburg): Nicole Atkins Record Release Party
My girl Nicole finally has her Columbia Records debut album ready for public consumption and, to celebrate its release, and her appearance on Letterman that night, had the good taste to invite the finest DJ in town to get her and her people down with the choicest mashes.

Tue, Oct 30 (2am - 4am): Club Midway (25 Avenue B): Tail end of spooky night featuring Star Spangles, Dave the Spazz, etc.
Miss Molly at Midway has cooked up an amazing garage and rock bill and, the minute the SOUL PROPRIETOR leaves Nicole’s party, will be on a car to relieve one of New York’s finest WFMU/Union Pool’s Dave the Spazz

Wed, Oct 31 (10pm - 4am): Motor City (127 Ludlow): Welcome to My Nightmare: Haunted House of Rock: This is the final night of the Halloween set in all of its glory coming straight from the home base. Need I say more… This is the mash of all mashes!
