Soul Proprietor embarks upon a week of Dance-Offs and Bake-Offs
by Jonathan
What follows is a description of an uncommon week of gigs in which New York Night Train’s soul proprietor spins no less than two contests by himself and three club hoodangs featuring a total of five of his close personal friends. Hop on for the entire duration and I’ll let you off on Sunday…
Tonight, Weds, Oct 10: Motor City (127 Ludlow, Manhattan), 10pm-4am, FREE, w/Brad Truax: I’m totally stoked to bro down with the one and only Senor Brad Traux. If you are of the few who imagine you don’t know the man, perhaps you may remember him from performing with such acts as Home, Jah Division, White Magic, Woods, Soldiers of Fortune, or Broke Review. No? Or his long days journey into night at Kim’s? OK, then, his recent shenanigans behind the bar at Daddy’s? Florida? Ever been there? Never mind then… We’ll still have the maître d’ reserve you a stool…
Thur, Oct 11: Beauty Bar (231 E 14th, Manhattan),11pm-4am, FREE w/DJs Melissa Fanny Tutti and Gregg Foreman:This totally flew out of thin air today. But all three of us were asked to man various sections of this legendary Manhattan establishment. I imagine Catpower’s Gregg Foreman’s gonna play the hits, Crystal Stilts’ Tutti’s gonna rock out, and I’m gonna play John Cage’s “4:33″ all night.
Fri, Oct 12: Savalas (285 Bedford, Williamsburg), Ants In Yr Pants Dance Party w/guest DJs Michael Gerner and Ivan Sunshine of Vietnam, 10pm-4am, FREE: Ants In Yr Pants Is back!… Every Friday from here on out. And this week we’ve got a real mover. You may not believe it but local celebrities gone nationwide (they bad) Vietnam aren’t just bunch of pretty freshly shaved faces, but they also have some fine jocks in their all-time ranks and have no fear of forcing you to get down to all kinds of funky sounds - sometimes against yr will, sometimes at Texas gunpoint. If you get there early, Ivan, currently of Ghost Exits of Love as Laughter, will demonstrate his crab scratch while former Primadonna Michael shakes his head. Get on it bruthas and sistas…
Sat, Oct 13: Glasslands (289 Kent, Williamsburg), Soul Clap and Dance-Off &035;4, 10pm-4am, $2: It’s difficult to Imagine that its already Soul Clap time again. That’s right. Any of you that went to the last one we did at Glasslands, a month ago, are well aware that the Dance-Off includes no shortage of stiff dancing competition and opinionated neighborhood celebrity judges. Each contestant gets down to some James Brown and no one know’s who will control the soul bowl. Do you have what it takes? Either way, it’s something to watch and you don’t have to enter to dance if you want to and leave your friends behinds. Join our group, secret society for the soul party revival, nyc chapter local 23
Sun, Oct 14: Enid’s (560 Manhattan Ave, Greenpoint), Annual Apple Pie Bake Off, 6pm, FREE: While I’m attempting to make my smooth and complete transition from dance parties to contests, I can hardly believe that it’s been an entire year since the last bake-off. I gotta warn ya, as in the dance-off, this isn’t to be taken lightly. There’re some neighborhood bakers of iron chef proportions ready to cut you up and leave you bleeding apple pie filling. And everybody gets to consume the goods after the judges have their taste. i think I’m gonna mix my seasonal Halloween hits with eating music - mostly from Louisiana and involving a piano… Don’t worry, no “American Pie”…
