by Jonathan

Wednesday, November 28, 2007, NewYorkNightTrain Wednesdays, Motor City (127 Ludlow, Manhattan), 10pm, FREE: If you must go out and damage your liver tonight, it might as well be at Motor City and with an accompanying soundtrack consisting of the quality rock’n’roll selections of New York Night Train Soul Proprietor Mr. Jonathan Toubin. And, if by chance you have decided against Wednesday night debauchery, then, perhaps I may be able to interest you in….

hursday, November 29, 2007, Transatlantic Timewarp: A Daft Discotheque, Beauty Bar Back Room (231 E. 14th, Manhattan), 11pm, FREE: New York Night Train’s latest venture is a collaboration between the Soul Proprietor and walking musical encyclopedia and rock machine, the indomitable Ms. Melissa Fanni Tutti. The dynamic duo play you the dance music hits from smack dab in the center of popular music’s greatest decade, mostly American and English but often beyond: soul, garage, mod, girl group, bubblegum, and early psychedelics plus a dash of frat r&b, discotheque, boogaloos, tropicalia, yé-yé, latin delights, etc… Let the evening pass by by playing records, the sounds of groovy hi fi. I say “Yeh yeh!” That’s what I say, I say “Yeh, yeh!”

And then, this weekend, I’m beside myself because my personal favorite contemporary entertainer, the 9th Wonder of the 9th Ward, musician/composer/inventor/marching band leader/party-rocker extraordinaire, Quintron, will be in New York to personally deliver fan Laurie Anderson his most popular invention, a brand-new state-of-the-art hand-made Cypress Drum Buddy… and, while he’s here, will be starring in two New York Night Train events this weekend…

Friday, November 30 at Ants In Yr Pants Dance Party, Savalas, 10pm, $3 (285 Bedford, Williamsburg): Quintron performs Drum Buddy-based DJ sets all night long for your dancing pleasure! Plus additional sets by the party’s house DJ NYNT Soul Proprietor Mr. Jonathan Toubin. Superb sound, lights, and dancefloor - plus cheap drinks (and sponsored by PBR no less). A whole lotta pumpin’ for only $3!

Saturday, December 1, Animal Train Happening, Glasslands(289 Kent, Williamsburg), 10pm, $7: This “Happy Garden”-themed party will feature the world premier of Trixie and the Tree Trunks, a film made by Q and his equally unique and masterful significant other, world renowned puppeteer and artist Miss Pussycat (the lovely and talented Ms. P will be present as well!), Quintron’s performance piece for three Drum Buddies, a live set by Golden Triangle, DJ sets by Quintron, Mr. Jonathan Toubin, and Eric Z of Mighty Robot, go go dancing by the Marmaladies, projections by Secet Project Robot, decor by Live With Animals, and much more. nynt’s saturday soul party gets a “voice choice”!

by Jonathan

http://www.villagevoice.com/nycguide/ev119372,.html

Reality-TV contestant-wannabes need to get their start someplace—so if you want to show America you’ve got talent, test your moves on Williamsburg first. The Soul Clap Party and Dance Off has competitors in bell-bottoms (preferably in primary-color prints) vying for half the take at the door. DJ Jonathan Toubin, from underground music zine (and label of the same name) New York Night Train, spins the 45s. The mid-’60s to early-’70s r&b and funk will have you dancing with the stars; a panel of neighborhood celebrities picks the winner. Past judges have included CMJ editor in chief Kenny Herzog, Tha Pumpsta and Lil Rae Rae of Durty Nanas, and Michael Gerner and Ivan Sunshine of the band Vietnam. (Jackson)

thanksgiving parties galore!

by Jonathan

After a global search, a Dutch expedition located New York Night Train’s missing soul proprietor in Tanzania’s North Zanzibar region, among a heard of wildebeests devouring wild grass with rabid vigor. Apparently the infamous local party DJ lost his marbles not long after becoming a vampire a few weeks back, was Shanghaied at a Malaysian mafia gathering after hours in a Queens massage parlor, jumped ship mid-Atlantic, was rescued by a some South African marines who found him repugnant and dumped him in Capetown, where he stowed away in a herring barrel attempting to get back home, but wound up drifting the wrong way and was discovered and dumped somewhere along the coast of West Africa.

Now that he has been returned to his rightful owners, the City of New York, Mr. Jonathan Toubin will resume performing the civic duty of keeping the local party pumping. A shadow of his formal self, wandering the streets in a lobotomized daze, the Soul Proprietor can no longer perform simple human functions, to the point of requiring fork-feeding and accompaniment to the bathroom. But, though he can’t even hold a conversation, Toubin’s constant DJ experience, earned in a shadowy life that was beginning to amount to nothing more than an eternal night of parties, has left him with only one asset – an automatic ability to select, cue, pitch, EQ, and transition vinyl records into a museum of late-20th Century culture, a symphony of hundreds of movements, and, on the most base level, the most perfect accompaniment to a night out. Like pigeons soaring above the city, cats cleaning themselves in alleys, or neighborhood dogs humping your leg, this innate function is performed with no shortage of gusto.

Tonight, November 21, NYNT Wednesday, Motor City - Jive Turkey Night: Come see the new, mechanical, and improved DJ and show him how thankful you are for both him and the nightly parties that you took for granted before he disappeared. Tonight he throws down a homespun set for all you orphans, po’ kids, holiday workers, and punks that just hate home, family, and/or the symbolism inherent in the sharing a table with an entire people that will soon be victims of a mass genocide and violently replaced on their own turf by their visitors on the other end of the table. Here you will find a more traditional middle American feeling than usual and rockin’ songs about family, food, and, New York Night Train’s favorite holiday theme, suicide…

Friday, November 23, Ants In Yr Pants Dance Party, Savalas – Turkey Trot:Tonight New York Night Train will accelerating the tempo to both help you knock off a few of those holiday pounds and provide you with heightened levels of pleasure - perhaps well beyond any you’ve ever experienced! C’mon now - I did say perhaps… Many forget that this isn’t only the beginning of the Christmas shopping season but also the dawn of the Christmas party season - an occasion that obviously calls for an eclectic yet purely Satanic mix of movers. Sound, lights, and cheap booze. What better you got to do? Come sweat to the oldies…

Saturday, November 24, Soul Clap and Dance Off #5, Glasslands: One of NYNT’s most popular parties, the Soul Clap and Dance Off is rapidly becoming a New York institution – so much so that even the Village Voice got wind of it (check out this weeks Voice Choices). The Soul Proprietor plays primarily soul 45s, rare groove novelties and obscurities, and occasional hits, for six hours straight, while folks from all over the city come to try to win what is becoming a healthy cash prize with their eccentric dance steps. And everyone gets down til they’re shoved out the door. Free beer from 10pm – 11pm. Only $2.

did the soul proprietor fake his own death?

by Jonathan

As most of you are well aware by now, New York Night Train Soul Proprietor Mr. Jonathan Toubin has turned up missing. Embarking upon a high-speed train ride, the conductor’s most recent mission to rock your pants off, which led to an exhaustive run of nearly thirty gigs in the last month, culminated in a bloody epic Peckinpah-esque conclusion. Mr. Toubin’s final ride and brave demise, somewhere between those of Casey Jones and John Henry, is a narrative evocative not only a number of highlights from the canon American folklore, but one with unambiguous similarities to the tales of mythical heroes across geographical and chronological barriers.

Before you abandon all hope, dear readers, please be aware that, while ample evidence exists to confirm the end of this chapter, we should not be so hasty as to close the book entirely. Since disappearing after Friday’s Ants In Yr Pants Dance Party at Savalas, the Soul Proprietor’s remains haven’t yet been discovered and recent reports of sightings in Buenos Aires, Dublin, and Capetown still offer hope that our hero faked his own death and there are a few local suspects, all of whom remain suspiciously quiet (co-conspirators?), and are, to varying degrees, likely to be concealing information relating to either the nature of his disappearance or the location of his remains.

As you have so perceptively discerned, the train keeps-a-rolling all night long. And while the disquieting sight of the empty conductor’s seat certainly compels you to ask what phantom drives this metallic leviathan, we urge you to divert your eyes from the looming precipice ahead and instead focus on solving the mystery at hand – commencing with the following list of suspects – be they bystanders, villains, or saviors:

Wednesday, November 14, New York Night Train Wednesday, Motor City: Actress Zumi Rosso (most recently seen in Whassup Rockers?), and musician Michael Gerner, currently of Vietnam, both roommates of the Soul Proprietor, and key suspects in his disappearance, both have unlimited access to the city’s most infamously exquisite and haphazardly extensive vinyl library, and will juggle the scratchy artifacts into the early morning for your listening pleasure.

Thursday, November 15: 1960s Discotheque, Beauty Bar back room: The non-paralleled sonic expertise of none other than Mr. Toubin’s partner in this new weekly enterprise, another key suspect in his disappearance, Melissa “Fanni Tutti” Scaduto of Crystal Stilts fame, may offer up a few clues. But currently Ms. Tutti only pleas the fifth – only uttering gibberish involving a strong desire to see you Swim, Hully Gully, and Monkey.

Friday, November 16, Ants In Yr Pants Dance Party, Savalas: will be helmed by two more possible culprits in the Conductor’s disappearance: award-winning filmmaker Eva S/ Aridjis, whose most recent masterpiece, La Santa Muerte is currently receiving international screenings, and Nicholas Ray, formerly assuming the alias Nick Diablo, leader of Viva l’American Death Ray Music, drummer for Golden Triangle, guitarist for April March, and singer/guitarist for Hundred Eyes. Both also refuse to cooperate in the investigation and claim ignorance in all matters involving the disappearance but recently made a public statement about their ambition to make you itch and scratch each other across the floor beneath the constellation or rotating red disco dots.

Conspiracy anyone? Who is to gain? Stay tune ’til next week…

Finally, regardless of the health and well-being of Soul Proprietor Mr. Jonathan Toubin, legendary New Orleans Ninth Ward musician/inventor/marching band leader/party-rocker extraordinaire/cult hero Quintron will be participating in two upcoming NYNT events - November 30 at Ants In Yr Pants Dance Party at Savalas (Drum Buddy-based DJ sets!) and December 1 at Animal Train Happening at Glasslands - “happy garden” theme party with the world premier of Ms. Pussycat’s new film Trixie and the Tree Trunks, a performance piece for three Drum Buddies, live set by Golden Triangle, and much more….
