A Week of Slits, Punks, and Lips!

by Jonathan

Weds, Mar 5, New York Night Train Wednesdays, Motor City (127 Ludlow), 10pm, free: NYNT’s long-standing Wednesday party’s been totally slammin’ of late and this week should be no exception. Not only do we have house DJ Mr. Jonathan Toubin and guest DJ Michael Stock of LA’s Part Time Punks and Punky Reggae parties, but also, unbelievably (pinch me!), guests The Slits, who will inhabiting the friendly confines of Motor City for their after-party as well as participating in some of the late-night sounds.

Thurs, Mar 6, Shakin’ All Over Under Sideways Down!, Beauty Bar (231 E. 14th, East Village, Manhattan), 11pm, FREE: This partee’ is a collaboration between the NYNT’s Soul Proprietor Mr. Jonathan Toubin and musical encyclopedia on wheels and rock machine, the indomitable Ms. Melissa Fanni Tutti - turning dance music platters centered smack dab in the center of popular music’s greatest and most diverse decade. Making a go at channeling the variety inherent in the playlists of the discotheques and radio of the era plus much of the stuff that was too underground at the time to get there, we attempt to cover soul, garage, freakbeat, boogaloo, AM radio pop, British Invasion, electric blues, girl groups, bubblegum, frat rock, late r&b, early funk, early psychedelics, discotheque schmaltz, boogaloos, tropicalia, yé-yé, latin delights, etc.

Fri, Mar 7, Ants In Yr Pants Dance Party at K&M, 10pm, free: Friday night New York Night Train’s Ants In Yr Pants Dance Party, formerly exclusively at Savalas, is now mobile! Tonight Conductor Mr. Jonathan Toubin spins six hours straight of party curiosities, obscurities, and classics. This NYNT’s first time at this Polish Restaurant turned snazzy night-spot and we’re particularly stoked that Jamie of Breakup Breakdown and Feels So Good Let’s Do It is both promoting and slinging drinks all night

Sat, Mar 8, New York Night Train presents Part Time Punks and Jah Division, Glasslands (289 Kent, Williamsburg), 10pm, $6: DJ’s Michael Stock (filmmaker) and Benjamin White (GoGoGo Airheart guitarist) of L.A.’s most popular subcultural dance party Part Time Punks lay down hours of post-punk dance action with DJ Jonathan Toubin while The Social Registry’s dub-Joy Division cover band Jah Division performs with an expanded line-up featuring members of Animal Collective, White Magic, and an all-star Social Registry cast.

Sat, Mar 8, New York Night Train’s Loose Caboose, Club Midway (25 Avenue B), 10pm, FREE: DJs John Fell Ryan and Porkchop of Excepter w/special guest La La Ryan command Midway’s upstairs while a world-class noise bill consisting of Hair Police, Kites, Carlos Giffoni, and Halflings play downstairs. While Excepter’s is indeed an experimental band, JF and Porkchop are two of the East Coast underground’s most celebrated get-down party DJs. Also, in case there’s any confusion, despite unfortunate harassment by local authorities, Midway is re-opened and ready for business!

Sun, Mar 9, The Babymaker: New York Night Train’s Monthly Make-Out, Sin Sin (248 E. 5th St), 10pm, FREE: Have you ever been mellow? Mr. Jonathan Toubin has never even tried. But that doesn’t mean he isn’t willing to give it a go in yet another Quixotically bold surgical experiment reconfiguring the eternally amorphous Frankenstein monster that, for lack of better terminology, we will call NYC subterranean nightlife. Will it be yet another “Cadillac One Piece at a Time” surrounded by white elephants or will your children grow up to thank him? While celebrity bartender Javad gently shakes the cocktails like a pair of Argentine maracas in the Rainbow Room, the Conductor/Soul Proprietor swirls a mix of lazy rock, soul, blues, jazz, crooners, exotica, soundtracks, and other light delights for your slow-dancing and lounging pleasure. Intimate conversations over snazzy cocktails in black leather booths fade into the a sound as plush as the red velvet decor. Bring a date gate! Slow jams for fast living!

Mon, Mar 10, New York Night Train Wednesdays, Motor City (127 Ludlow), 10pm, free: Secret party for secret reason featuring secret DJs!

Tues, Mar 11 - 19: GTT (That stands for Gone To Texas Y’awllllll!)! See ya on March 19 at Motor.

If you’re stickin’ around NYC, the Train has Ivan Sunshine and Sam Jayne of Love is Laughter babysitting on the 12th at Motor City and OJ and Carly of Golden Triangle on the 15th at Midway.

And, if you happen to find yourself in the big beautiful state of Texas, not only is it blue-bonnet season, but, there’s an official NYNT showcase Thursday night with El Kid Congo Powers y los Pink Monkey Birds (their first show in ions!), Stalkers, S-S-S-Spectres, y mas…. Then, on Saturday, a 16-band all-NYC bill curated by NYNT, Social Registry, and Cake Shop…..

Upon the Night Train’s return, look forward to the eight-week Store Wars series, in which the owners/managers/clerks of NYC’s finest underground record stores represent Wednesdays at Motor City (Earwax, Other Music, Academy, Eat, Cake Shop, Pass-Out, Williamsburg Flea Market, Crypt (Cool and Crazy), etc.), more 60s dancing at Beauty Bar, Ants In Yr Pants all over town including one with James Chance at Enid’s, yet another Soul Clap and Dance-Off, Excepter’s Record Release Party, and the Cheap and Plastique Magazine Release w/Golden Triangle, S-S-S-Spectres, Daniel Francis Doyle, and more.
