Mon, July 7: New York Night Train’s Secret Santo kickoff party w/Ian Svenonius (Soft Focus), Tim Warren (Crypt Records), Josh Styles (Smashed Blocked), and Jonathan Toubin (NYNT), Anna Copacabana (go go artiste), and Spencer Bewley (freaky deaky projections), Santos Party House (100 Lafayette), 10pm, $5: New York Night Train has a surprise gift for you! Tonight is the pre-opening hoodang for our weekly get-down at Santos Party House, the first cool disco in New York City in a couple of decades. Owned and run by a constellation of important figures in New York’s underground music community, Santos has quietly opened - steadily presenting all variety of prestigious dance music events featuring the finest disco, electro, and contemporary dance DJs. Now they’ve added maximum rock and soul to their already eclectic mix by bringing New York Night Train’s Mr Jonathan Toubin on board. Mr. Toubin and East Coast celebrity booking agent Yalan Papillons are stepping it up a notch – initiating a Monday party that is bringing in a collection of the finest rock DJs and bands from around the world every week – along with projectionists, performance, and dancers. To keep it fresh, and here’s why its “Secret” Santo, these shakin’ mega-events will not be listed or advertised in print - instead announced the 24 hours ahead of time via word of mouth, email, and the internet (that means you - dear myspace friends). Despite the quality and quantity of acts represented, Secret Santo is making an effort to keep one of the most democratic door prices in town ($5 to $10 – in some of the upcoming cases, more than half-off the typical ticket price for many of these shows!). This is gonna be the jam. Though Secret Santo’s officially opens upstairs in the big room on July 14th with an excellent French pop band, the introductory bash will take place in the basement on July 7 featuring for the first time all together, an East Coast DJ dream team, New York Night Train’s four favorite 45 spinners assembled as the house DJs at the party: Soft Focus host Ian Svenonius, Crypt Records head honcho Tim Warren (who has used his vast and unique collection to assemble such legendary compilations as Las Vegas Grind, Twist and Rumble, Back From The Grave, The Socker, and many more), the DJ/visionary behind the Smashed Blocked Party, Josh Styles, and, of course, New York Night Train soul proprietor/conductor Mr. Jonathan Toubin. Additionally, dancer/musician/performer/downtown institution the lovely and exciting Anna Copacabana provides the go go action and the astounding live 16mm projections of Spencer Bewley will be our kinetic wall-paper.
