The New York Night Train Soul Clap and Dance-Off, one of the NYC underground’s more popular monthly nightlife institutions and most prolific exports, returns Saturday. This final SOUL CLAP AND DANCE-OFF of 2009 bids a fond farewell to James Brown’s “Santa Claus Go Straight To The Ghetto”, Nathaniel Mayer’s “Mr Santa Clause”, and all other great holiday jams and get ready for a 2010 full of all kinds of new 45 rpm soul excitement. As always dance to 5 straight hoursMR JONATHAN TOUBIN‘s exquisitely wild 45rpm soul magic. And, at MIDNIGHT he’ll be be joined by MC LAURA LEIGH for the Dance-Off with a $100 grand prize featuring the following unusual collection of distinguished judges:
- AMBER DOYLE and RYAN COHN – Amber of deluxe suitmakers Doyle Meuser and Ryan of accessory line Ryan Matthew have joined forces in the Lower East Side’s classiest and most-talked-about new store AGAINST NATURE.
- JOE GAER and RICH ZERBO – the twin towers of the world’s best known subterranean labels – who bring you ethereal classics from the likes of GANG GANG DANCE, GHOST EXITS, and PSYCHIC ILLS to acclaimed recent releases by GROWING, Zs, and SIAN ALICE GROUP.
- MATT MONDANILE – the guitarist/vocalist/conceptualist behind a number of musical projects – most notably REAL ESTATE – whose debut full-length has in the last month has achieved international acclaim in the NY TIMES, PITCHFORK, ROLLING STONE, SPIN, and pretty much anywhere else you can imagine
- DJ MS CHIP – another DJ who came up with a wildly successful contest/party of her own, DROP DEAD GORGEOUS, and is now returning from a brief hiatus to rock your face off
- TOMMY VOLUME – the guitarist for STAR SPANGLES, both one of downtown’s last 20th century rock and roll bands and one of the secret progenitors of the 21st century’s new scene, Tommy will not be bribed.
Because its the Christmas weekend, we expect a more intimate family affair this time. Get up, get out, get in, and get down all night long… again!

-Thu, Dec 31: NYC, Motor City (FREE!) / Home Sweet Home ($5) / Cake Shop ($15): NY Night Train 3rd Annual Lower East Side New Years Marathon way past dawn!, 9pm – noon, FREE and up: New York Night Train’s 3rd annual Lower East Side New Years consists of three interlocking events within a few blocks of each other (Cake Shop, Home Sweet Home, and Motor City) starting at 9pm New Years Eve and moving on until NOON New Years Day! Motor City and Home Sweet Home have 24 hour licenses so its totally kosher to pretend you’re in New Orleans and bounce around all night. Here’s what’s on our menu:
- bands (Screaming Females, A.R.E.Weapons, Frankie and the Outs, etc)
- DJs (Jonathan Toubin all night long in all three locations, Smashed! Blocked!’s Josh Styles, Caleb of Sacred Bones Records, etc.)
- unique acts such as comedian Jeff Jensen (Matador Records) doing his latest ventriloquist act, superstar go go performance artist Anna Copa Cabanna (!), and Quality of My Life fanzine’s 2009 year-end awards!
- open bars and drink specials
And, if you have enough energy to keep up, NYC’s hardest working DJ, Mr Jonathan Toubin, will be back at Home Sweet Home at 10pm New Years Day for his weekly Shakin’ All Over Under Sideways Down maximum rock and soul 45 dance party.
