Dorothy Berry “You Better Watch Out” (Planetary, 1964): Today’s NY Night Train Party Platter

em>NY Night Train just started uploading an original 45rpm vinyl record every day on YouTube – the NYNT Daily Party Platter Playlist Hit up NYNT YouTube channel every day to see what’s cookin’…

Anyone interested in 1950s and 1960s r&b and soul 45s knows that Dorothy Berry waxed loads of stellar sides on a number of labels. Though she was prolific and made some of the better records of her time, she never recorded an LP and her tracks have never been compiled into a career retrospective. Hence there’s also very little information available about her work online or elsewhere. She is however often mentioned as the wife of Richard Berry – another under-appreciated talent best remembered for penning and recording “Louie Louie” and “Have Love Will Travel”. Also Dorothy Berry is known for her brief stint as one of Ray Charles’ backup singers The Raelettes. This neglect is unfortunate because Dorothy Berry is could really carry a tune with class and distinction, had a lot of great writing, backing, and production, and was a stunningly beautiful stylish woman to boot! I will definitely post more of her splendid performances in the future! And who knows, maybe somebody will put her 45rpm hits together on a long-player and help this fine artist get the props she deserves?

On a side note, this record sounds killer and was produced by David Gates of 70s Bread! Yep thee “I’d Like to Make It With You” Bread! Long before Gates was soft rockin’ through the 1970s, he wrote “Popsicles Icicles” and produced a ton of killer sides like Captain Beefheart’s two singles…

Here’s a nice blog about Dorothy Berry as the “Louie Louie” muse:

You’re listening to my daily addition to the New York Night Train Party Platter playlist. Each track here is recorded directly from the original 45 (no bootlegs, reproductions, etc) to give you an idea of what the real deal authentic vinyl sounds like. COME BACK EVERY DAY FOR A NEW FIX! Because the records pass so quickly at my dance parties, this channel is an attempt to stop and focus on one record at a time in hopes that it’ll turn you on to the artists, tracks, labels, etc. I’m just hipping myself to a lot of these records for the first time as well – so you can view this as a part of our journey to learning more about cool old records together! But mostly I hope this music moves you as much as it moves me.

Get your enjoys,
