Zumi, Mr. Jonathan Toubin’s old roommate and good friend and former New York Night Train Wednesday regular, just got in from LA and is leaving tomorrow – and they’ve both been too busy to spend any quality time together! Did the same thing happen to you? Well, that’s OK because we’re offering last chance to catch a little of Ms Rosso’s LA sunshine before it goes back to the opposite coast. Oh yeah, as always, Mr. Toubin will be playing the records at this, New York Night Train’s original party – and the “Cheers” of the Lower East Side rock scene.
Thurs, August 13: Boogaloo Shampoo Night Horse Afterparty w/DJ Mr. Jonathan Toubin and guest Sam Velde, Beauty Bar Brooklyn, 10:30pm, FREE:: Beauty Bar just celebrated their opening at their new Brooklyn location, 921 Broadway at Myrtle, Bushwick and New York Night Train is following them across the bridge. Soul proprietor Mr Jonathan Toubin fills the Beauty Bar’s sleek and sexy new joint floor to ceiling with bubbly 45rpm soul, pre-funk, and r&b classics, novelties, and obscurities to get you down all night long. The Manhattan party/hangout has seen guest DJs like Daptone proprietor/Sharon Jones bassist/bandleader, Gabriel Roth, Make-Up’s Ian Svenonius, Butthole Surfers’ Gibby Haynes, the legendary Phast Phreddie of the Subway Soul, Kid Congo Powers of the Cramps and Gun Club, Dale Crover of the Melvins, Calvin Johnson of Beat Happening, etc etc etc. So expect not only New York Night Train’s exceptional standard of quality, but also some very distinguished guests and patrons – like tonight, when we have an afterparty for Los Angeles’ Night Horse featuring their vocalist, also a notoriously awesome DJ, Sam Velde!

Fri, August 14: Shakin’ All Over Under Sideways Down w/Mr Jonathan Toubin and special guests DAVID JOHANSEN and Josh Styles, Home Sweet Home (131 Chrystie, Lower East Side, Manhattan), 10:30pm, $5:Most of you are aware that Shakin’ All Over Under Sideways Down is the weekly maximum rock and soul party where Mr. Jonathan Toubin and regular amazing guests throw down wild 45s, primarily from the mod soul, r&b, girl group, and garage rock canon but also a bit of movin’ doo wop, glam, rockabilly, punk, boogaloo, ye ye, blues, and other related genres. So New York Night Train is thrilled to present special guest DJ David Johansen this week not only because he is one of our favorite vocalists, performers, and cultural figures, and the front man for one of the finest rock and roll outfits of all-time, but also because the New York Dolls are educators who introduced us to so many of our favorite songs that helped launch us on our current path. Mr. Toubin heard the Dolls versions of “Stranded In the Jungle,” “Pills,” “Don’t Start Me Talkin’,” “There’s Gonna Be A Show Down,” and the intro to “Give Him a Great Big Kiss” before he ever heard the originals and can hardly believe he’s going to share the DJ booth with such an seminal figure in his musical journey. As one could imagine from a very eclectic career that started with the Dolls and wound up with all kinds of great contemporary rock solo albums, his tropical loungy persona Buster Poindexter, and his distinctive yet faithful interpretations of the Anthology of American Folk Music and other downhome blues material with the Harry Smiths (did you see him jam with Howlin’ Wolf guitar god Hubert Sumlin a few years back?), Johansen is a solid music lover who’s been studying popular song for decades, and, according to sources privileged enough to hear his mix CDs, the man has exquisite taste. Speaking of amazing records, Mr Jonathan Toubin’s favorite DJ, Smashed! Blocked!’s Josh Styles, is also gonna throw down because Johansen is also hands down one of his all-time heroes as well.
Because we are presumptuous enough to believe that you are as stoked about this as we are, we’re assuming the night will be a bit tough to get into. And, since New York Night Train wants to make sure that our good friends gets to experience this, while there will be no free guest list this time, there will however be a list insuring that all of you fine people who’ve given us so much love and support in the past get to be there for this. Therefore all of the people who confirm on facebook ( http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=116806888797&ref=mf ) or email a confirmation to mailinglist@newyorknighttrain.com before Friday afternoon, will get on a priority list to come in before people who are not on.
