The big show news of the weekend is of course that eclecticly adventurous Social Registry label is celebrating four years of pumpin’ out NYC classic after classic with a big fest Saturday and Sunday afternoon with all of the greats and some unique surprises…. go here for more
Also, tonight, whereeever you may be, you can’t turn a corner without bumping into choice jams. Not only do I spin the fat stuff at Union Pool all night with the legendary drummer/mighty party rocker Ryan Sawyer (Tall Firs, ex-Fiery Furnaces, etc.) all night long, but you can check out Vashti and Cameron from Golden Triangle at Daddy’s, and, one of the finest DJ’s there is, Senior Matt Pendleton from New Orleans Louisiana with one of the finest dancers there is, the shimmy-licious Ms. Anna Copa Cabana, at Motor City.
And, tomorrow, the rumors are indeed true, Ms. Copa Cabana and I are joining forces, my grooves and her moves, upstairs at Club Midway for an evening of shakin’ all over while the Star Spangles, The Stalkers, and a number of our finest rockers go at it below us in the basement.
Then, also tomorrow, an important show has been moved from Supreme Trading to Spike Hill of all places - two of the the most rockingest Texas punk bands, the Golden Boys and the Strange Boys, will be joined by New York’s wildest new party band, Golden Triangle, at, of all places, Spike Hill!
Another quietly underground loud event at 4pm at Passout Records - international poet of mystery Zach Lipez’s FreshKills, Pee Wee and Memphis Mike’s ICU, KBR, and the debut of Some Action side project Tigershark.

Yes yes y’all… Crotona Park Jams are here - bringing nearly all of hip hop’s most important founding fathers to the plate for free. If you care at all about this music, particularly the sounds and details of its 1970s genesis and early 1980s climb, it’s 100% worth a trek to the beautiful Bronx.
Today’s bill is a living museum of hip hop culture. MORE…

Did ya see that? Roy Head, one of the more under-appreciated figures in American popular music, and certainly one of the more exciting, is still a top-notch showman more than forty later. While he didn’t do the weird James Brown contortions, I witnessed Head putting on an even more intense performance at a small club gig in Austin only a couple of years back. While “Treat Her Right” is one of the most dynamic pop hits of all time, every good selector knows that “Just A Little Bit” is his real jam.
Today you’ll find the inimitable Mr. Head billed alongside MORE…
If there ever was a reason to spend a Friday night in Red Hook, this is it… Not in the least because one of the more interesting figures in late-20th Century music, the one and only mighty Mighty Hannibal, is blazing back into town. A seasoned performer and consummate entertainer who’s still very much got it, and regularly appearing in our fair town thanks to his relationship with the stellar Norton Records, Hannibal’s gonna make you dance, laugh, scream, and shout with a hodge-podge of outstanding hits from across his career. He’ll be joined by local vocal trio the Dansettes, who backed him and performed as Archie Bell’s Drells last year at the McCarren Park Pool gig.
Despite years of absence and erratic output due to an edgy lifestyle that included no shortage of heroin addiction and pimping, Mighty Hannibal managed to knock out some of the finer 45s of the 1960s. MORE…
Every summer legions of bands with practically no following to speak of outside of their regions pack it in the van and roll around the country with no AC, windows down, pocketing less at the door than goes in their tank, eating the cheapest fast foods, drinking PBR, and losing jobs and lovers back home in the process. But, like some folks’ lord Jesus Christ, their suffering is not in vein. These are the folks keeping our world turning, keeping life real, and keeping music exciting. God bless ‘em every one. These are also the shows we always miss and hear rave reviews of the next day from the guy working behind the bar or a member of a local band on the bill. This evening I’d like to propose that each and every one of you select one of these quixotic minstrels and make a serious attempt at witnessing their entire set. After all, tonight our li’l town hosts no less than three such acts at three different clubs, all of whom are excellent adventure bets that’ve traveled 3,000 miles east from three different cities for the unlikely prospect that they may access your discerning ear for roughly 45 minutes, your girlfriend for approximately an hour, and your couch for seven or eight hours. The Junior Reid show this afternoon in the tree-lined comfort of Summerstage promises to be a lively diverse New York affair ideal for a 95 degree afternoon. Whereas yet another party in the blazing concrete slab that is McCarren Park Pool, today stuffed with the type of annoying kids that appreciate Dan Deacon (read our most recent recommendation with free mp3s) since he got swallowed by blogs and New York Times, etc. – in addition to whatever the heck kinda folks Octopus Project manage to bring out. Without a doubt the Boredons’ 77 Drum is the most exciting musical event going on in New York, or perhaps anywhere in the world, today, or perhaps this entire year. Today Boredoms celebrate twenty years of unique, challenging, and masterful music with Eye on vocals, electronics, and effects and their three drummers, Yoshimi, Yojiro, and Senju joined by 74 more. And it’s not just any percussionists that will be joining them, MORE…
