Billyburg multi-band madness tonight

by Jonathan

Golden Triangle at the Glasslands

Today is far too beautiful to sit behind the computer and do this for real - but, as its my duty to tell you what’s up, if I wasn’t DJ-ing at Enid’s all night (come dancing later!), I’d be at one of Williamsburg’s fine multi-band local bills tonight: MORE…

Mahotella Queens Bring the Mbaqanga

by Jonathan

Legendary South African song and dance crew Mahotella Queens have been purveyors of lush vocal harmonies and unique bouncy dance steps for more than four decades. They are some of the most notable exemplars of mbaqanga, a style emerging from Johannesburg suburbs like Sophiatown which fused rural Zulu vocal music with Afro-American pop (initially big band swing) later, incorporating gospel, r&b, and other styles as it further defined itself and rose to prominence in the 1960s. We Got Artanker Convoy Rockin’ Through the Night

by Jonathan

Artanker Convoy

Their lightly psychedelic groove wallpaper isn’t abstract and weird enough for the crowds of more esoteric label mates Gang Gang Dance, Psychic Ills, and Telepathe. And they’re a bit too abstract and weird for the Madeski, Martin, and Wood jam band set. And, since they don’t fit in very well to any of the trends of contemporary culture, Artanker Convoy has decided to announce that they’re gonna do what everyone else is doing and hop on the new rave band wagon…. Radios Appear Tonight!

by Jonathan

Radio Birdman

Didja ever dream you’d get a chance to witness this? Sydney’s finest Detroit rock’n’roll band of all time is back together, embarking upon their first American tour in decades, and playing New York tonight.

Before Sex Pistols were even a glimmer in Malcolm McLaren’s eye, even before he had the New York Dolls in red patent leather, and yes, even a couple of years before the Saints down under, there was Radio Birdman. MORE…

Fiery Furnaces Reignite Tonight

by Jonathan

Fiery Furnaces

\'Fiery” class=”alinks_links” onclick=”return alinks_click(this);” title=”their official site” rel=”external”>Fiery Furnaces tonight at Studio B with dios (malos) (details here)

Where’ve the omnipresent Fiery Furnaces been? On the road non-stop and pushing out records at the rate of about one every six months for about three years, the Friedburger sibling took a much deserved break for the first time in ions, recorded a new album, and inked a deal with Thrill Jockey. And, the good news is that they’re back in the saddle tonight at Studio B. MORE…

Vietnam Returns… In Broad Daylight

by Jonathan

vietnam the band

Vietnam with Rodrigo y Gabriela and DH and DAVE P at Summerstage (details here)

Local heroes Vietnam haven’t put in a local appearance in ages because they’ve been rollin’ and a tumblin’ ’round North America for months now supporting the release of their self-titled debut LP. This afternoon the road finally leads back home as the boys put in their first ever performance at Central Park’s Summerstage… For free of course. MORE…

Intergalactic Booty Party Friday!

by Jonathan

The year is 2007 and World War III has rendered New York an empty shell. The only survivors of the nuclear attack are residents of the Williamsburg waterfront who became immune to the nuclear waste due to years of exposure to the toxic sludge buried beneath their homes. Once an international Mecca for dance clubs, the city now only has one remaining disco, the Glasslands – where the interior space has been transformed to reflect the post-apocalyptic atmosphere outside, and the only music that remains are future-themed jams from the 1970s and early 1980s: intergalactic funk, space disco, and robotic electro. With an uncertain future, the inhabitants will party like it’s the end of the world.

Friday, June 29 New York Night Train and Live With Animals throw a ball for the survivors at Glasslands. The sonic artifacts of the misguided 20th Century vision of the future will be spun by Chris from Ghost Exits, Nick Ray from Viva l’American Death Ray Music, Dr. Wizard of the Earth, Sean from Stay High, and Jonathan from NewYorkNightTrain. The Marmaladies, Vashti and Carly from Golden Triangle will provide go go dancing. Short musical sets will be presented by Stu Spasm of Lubricated Goat, with his One-Legged Octopus and techno wizard Diako Diakoff. The space will be decorated and recreated by the Freestyle Art Association and Live with Animals. And the future lighting will be provided by Vietnam’s Ivan Sunshine. The admittance is only $3.

Be there or regret it throughout the uncertain quantity of hours and days that remain.

When is Puddin’ Tang Time?

by Jonathan

Puddin’t Tang

Puddin’ Tang performs at Matchless tonight (details here)

Searching for the ideal sound for the lazy urban heat? Flowing as relaxed and twangy as the Velvet Underground’s Loaded hits like “Cool It Down” and “Train Round the Bend”? Syncopated, strutty, and riff-based a’la Jonathan Fire*Eater/the Stones? Sweaty and swamp-assed as Tony Joe White? With the asymmetrical rhythmic pattern-making of the early Fall’s Americana-ish numbers? Fused together around the choruses with a wad of Tommy James’ bubblegum? But all coming from an unassuming classic indie rock perspective that could belong only to seasoned vets? If this makes your mouth water, you’re gonna love the way Puddin’ Tang rolls - a fanboat with steamboat dignity gliding across the black shadows and moon reflections of muddy Newton Creek, past the many rusty marvels of 20th Century industry. Hawkwind Blows… Into Town

Hawkwind….

Hawkwind performs tonight at Club Europa ( more info here)

While Bad Brains are performing on a boat, the truly amazing news is that Hawkwind is indeed playing tonight in Greenpoint at Club Europa. I’m certain that I don’t need to explain to this site’s readers much about the originators and supreme purveyors of space rock. But I would however like to look into exactly who’s will be in the lineup tonight. MORE…
