According to a number of connoisseurs, this new band isn’t only Danny’s return to the Back from the Grave-style primal garage punk of the Gories, but one of the best new bands going from that universe. While Toubin has typically helmed the ship entirely on his own, underground rock legends like David Johansen (NY Dolls), Jello Biafra(Dead Kennedys), Jon Spencer (Blues Explosion, Pussy Galore), Calvin Johnson (Beat Happening, Dub Narcotic), and Gibby Haynes (Butthole Surfers) have all randomly popped in as guest DJs on occasion.

With the intent to cement his night’s reputation as the finest and most prestigious rock and soul 45 party in the entire world, Mr. Jonathan Toubin is putting his money where his mouth is – bringing in legendary rock and rollers who also have amazing record collections and/or the finest professional 45 DJs from around the world each and every week. Basically, Mr Jonathan Toubin is bringing in his musician, collector, and DJ heroes from around the world to make his typically sold-out party even better. And the cover will remain $3!

The following will all DJ alongside Mr. Jonathan Toubin except where noted (*):

- july 2: Jim Sclavunos (NYC/London) of Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Grinderman, and Teenage Jesus and the Jerks (formerly of Sonic Youth, Alex Chilton, etc)

- july 9: Kid Congo Powers (Washington, DC) – In The Red Records solo recording artist (formerly of The Cramps, Gun Club, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, etc)

- july 16: Ian Svenonius (Washington, DC) – of Vice TV’s “Soft Focus,” author of “Psychic Soviet,” leader of Chain and the Gang (formerly of Make-Up, Nation of Ulysses, Weird War, etc.)

- july 23: DJ Primo (San Francisco) – DJ/promoter of SF institution Oldies Night

- july 30: Howie Pyro (L.A.) – Intoxica Radio DJ, founder/DJ of legendary Green Door party, and former bassist of Danzig, D-Generation, and ‘77 CBGB punks The Blessed

- Aug 6: Dan Kroha (Detroit) – guitarist/vocalist for The Gories, Demolition Doll Rods, etc

- *Aug 13: Josh Styles (NYC) of the Smashed! Blocked! party (subbing for Jonathan Toubin – his favorite DJ) w/guest Todd-O-Phonic Todd (Hoboken, NJ) of WFMU, Maxwell’s and Southpaw, and the head of Telstar, Candy, and Satan Records

- Aug 20: James Chance (NYC) of the Contortions and James White and the Blacks

Your other pals, Hari Kupian behind the bar and Marc Ryan at the door, are also working at this, Mr/ T’s only mellow hangout night. This week isn’t so mellow though because Senor JELLO BIAFRA himself is doing two DJ sets (JB’s in town with his new band Guantanamo School of Medicine - they play at the Brooklyn Masonic Temple the following night - go here for tickets!). This is far from some kind of celebrity gig. Jello, who spun the November Soul Clap in San Francisco, has more records than anybody you’ve ever met, some killer and very exquisite taste from many genres, and knows how to shake a room to boot. Also, when he’s not DJ-ing, Jello’s a friendly approachable gent who has plenty to discuss with you. Fall by and hang out.

Dear Monterrey friends and other folks in town for MtyMx Festival,

I sincerely apologize for not making it to Monterrey this time. I am so sad to have let you down and am conversely so flattered that you care at all that I couldn’t make it. I hope that next time I hear from you, it will be because I’m coming back to party in Sultana del Norte. I’ve done nearly a thousand gigs and never canceled once before now. Officially I didn’t turn up because I was coming down with a major cold after spending 12 straight hours outside, under-dressed for Saturday’s arctic chill during my own SXSW party. But I feel you deserve an adequate explanation that should shed some insight not only into my situation but that of some of the other cancellations as many of you don’t seem to understand the intricacies of both sides of the situation.

I admit I was on the fence about MtyMx for weeks because 1) I couldn’t get the organization to discuss my compensation or other important details of the gig with me and 2) I didn’t think I could adequately promote the Soul Clap as I couldn’t advertise a dance contest prize, judges, etc and didn’t even get the time or admission information until two days before and wouldn’t help with simple things like sending the facebook invite out to people. But I’m used to disorganization in regards to Mexican gigs (and American ones for that matter). So, leading up to Saturday, I was planning on DJ-ing two ambiguous afterparties for an undetermined sum of money – but I decided to do it – viewing it as a donation of a couple of free nights (sorry, but at this point in my career, the $100 or so artists were getting is pretty much free to me – particularly with the amount of time and effort involved) with the benefit of seeing my Monterrey friends, being a part of a noble and interesting experiment (and an amazing bill), and lending advocacy Todd’s bold and amazing idea.

By Saturday night/Sunday morning reports were already coming in about 10 to 16 hour bus-rides, the festival sending broken down school buses that turned back to Austin in disrepair, buses not showing up, all kinds of border hassles resulting from the escalation of the internal drug war the last few weeks, etc – and, finally, the events Thursday and Friday which apparently had much of the highway coming south into Monterrey shut down and much of the city in a bit of a panic. Despite the wave of cancellations and advice from my family, friends, and business associates (and my body) not to come, going back and forth on the issue throughout the night, and warning Todd that I may not turn up, I couldn’t bring myself to cancel.

Not long before we were to board the festival’s 6am shuttle, I got an email from Todd’s organization explaining that the 10pm, 2am, and now 6am buses didn’t materialize but we would be guaranteed spots on the 10am and 2pm buses. At this point I had worked my NY Night Train party from 11am to 11pm, and then the Vice Party from 11pm to 5am. The whole idea of going back to my dad’s house, sleeping a couple of hours, and dragging my worn-down self to see if a bus would indeed materialize and embark upon what was looking like a long and disorderly journey to be hopefully on time to a gig of uncertain details and minimal at best compensation sealed the deal for me – I went to bed for a couple of days.

All of you know I’m not a “pussy band” but a DJ who loves Mexico with all of my heart and has already played in Monterrey (at Yo Garage nonetheless) and elsewhere in the country on my own accord. Anyone who knows even a little bit about me is aware that I constantly hit all kinds of far-flung markets totally exhausted with no sleep – sometimes doing long consecutive runs of up to three straight weeks of between one and three gigs a day. As for the other bands, the ones I spoke with, though certainly concerned about the events of the last few days in Monterrey, mostly canceled due to the disorganization more than the fear – the kind of bands Todd had on the list are a hard-touring ballsy bunch accustomed to dealing with extreme situations. All of them were looking forward to coming to see you or they never would have agreed to do this. As for Todd, this kind of thing can be expected for the first shot of such a grandiose undertaking and he deserves kudos for attempting to go where no man has gone before. I hope he tries again next year ironing out a few details and learning from a few of this year’s oversights. We need to knock down the borders – both American and Mexican artists can mutually benefit from one-another’s markets and cultures and I think this is a great step. I really think people need to quit blaming both the festival and the bands as the situation on both sides is completely understandable and we’ve all worked together in the past and will definitely continue to do so in the future (hopefully in Mexico!).

Most of all, I regret not getting a chance to rock Monterrey again. While I hope this letter sheds a little light on the subject for others, it had been written para usted, my amigos/amigas south of the border. I really love you all and can’t wait to get down with you all once again – as soon as possible!

Usted está en mi corazón,
Señor Jonathan Toubin

This event is co-presented by comrade in arms Panache Booking with a little help from NYC amigos Cake Shop and Sacred Bones Records. The indoor stage was co-curated by Jason McNeely of Spider House. This NYC promoting DJ, booking agency, venue, and record label have banded together out of friendship and solidarity to bring a sponsorship-free day of the kind of high quality old school communal underground music fun that rarely rears its head these days.

We’ve chosen to execute the party yet again at this relaxed oasis of courtyard tables, food, and drink as an alternative to the less comfortable downtown music events – in hopes that this will yet again be a destination instead of a stop-off. However, since it’s only three blocks from the University of Texas, this popular institution is easy to reach by a variety of city buses that run up and down Guadalupe (The Drag) every few minutes taking you downtown and back (roughly a 10 min ride).

Don’t take our word for it, just ask anybody – last year’s all-day/all-night fiesta, headlined by The Seeds’ Sky Saxon (R.I.P.), was the unofficial SXSW jam of the year.
New York Night Train’s Soul Clap and Dance-Off celebrates its third birthday in style! In the last three years, the underdog party, which features an all night get-down to Mr. Jonathan Toubin’s exquisitely exciting soul 45s and a dance contest in the middle, has evolved from intimate neighborhood get-together to one of NYC’s biggest sold-out monthly institutions to global phenomenon. In the last year the party broke out of Brooklyn to ping-pong back and forth from Portland, Oregon to Portland, Maine, and from Mexico City to Tel Aviv while remaining stronger than ever at home – hipping both NYC and the rest of the world to some of the finest music of all time in the process.

To commemorate hitting the three year mark, the Soul Clap will feature an early record fair with sellers from the DJ and record vendor community, guest MC/DJ Ian Svenonius, and two Dance-Offs – a regular $100 contest at 11pm open to everyone and, at 1am, a $200 championship featuring winners of three years worth of contests leading up to tonight’s. As always, Laura Leigh is the MC and a cast of neighborhood personalities will judge the contests (see below) while Mr Toubin shakes you all night long!

Here’s the schedule:

9pm – 10-ish: Soul Record Fair/Swap with both record dealers and DJs hawking their wares. NY Night Train wants to get you not only to get down to the vinyle but get involved in the culture! Dealers will be making a collaborative DJ set out of 45s they have for sale. Also, all Sky Vodka drinks are $2! Dealers include:
- Casey from Eat Records
- Jonathan Toubin of New York Night Train
- Mr. Fine Wine of WFMU’s Downtown Soulville
- Doug from The Record Grouch
- Phast Phreddie, the Boogaloo Omnibus – LA punk legend behind the seminal “Backdoor Man” fanzine and current resident DJ of Subway Soul and the Wang Dang Doodle
- Rodney of NY Vinyl
- William from Radio Heartbeat (NY’s most notorious power-pop DJ with a box o’soul from his native New Orleans)

10pm – 4am: All night dancing to the 45rpm magic of Mr Jonathan Toubin and guest DJ Ian Svenonius (Chain and the Gang, Make-Up, Nation of Ulysses). Tonight’s party will feature the big beat, lights, and general aesthetic of a 60s discotheque – but revised from a more contemporary tripped-out and international perspective. DJs Jonathan Toubin and Josh Styles rotate a format that includes not only 60s discotheque classics but loads of fuzzy movers, foreign language jams, and obscurities. We get going around 11 and plan to shake it ’til you just can’t take it. This is the entire Animal Train crew reunited for an amazing cause… Every dollar made at this event benefits the legal defence of Heather and John Henry of the LA band Static Static.
