Six Organs of Admittance, Immaculate Machine - Mercury Lounge $12 Ben Chasney’s solo project Six Organs of Admittance is the shizzle. Chasney’s immaculate finger picking, artful drones, well-defined melodic lines, and free feel have proven him one of the most compelling contemporary guitarists. Eight albums in, SOA (as I write the acronym I recognize what he has in common with Rollins), continues to grow and improve its oddly accessible fusion of Eastern styles, Fahey-esque blues, Haino-esque noise. The latest, The Sun Awakens (read NYNT's review here) just released on Drag City, raised the bar from last year’s elegant and beautiful School of Flower – particularly in the transcendent twenty-three minute meditation, "River of Transfiguration.” Expect plenty of space where simple melodic figures slowly build upon one another until they disappear into walls of feedback, And, if you prefer your music a little more action-packed, a fine thing to do later tonight is celebrate the official commercial release of Scott Crary’s NYC no wave and beyond rock doc, Kill Your Idols at Lit. NYNT favorites Services perform and Crary spins some choice cuts.
