Antibalas – Marcus Garvey Park 7PM FREE

OK, I’m becoming predictable with yet another park event… But Anitbalas doesn’t play that often anymore and these shows are free, outdoors, and you’re much likely to see all kinds of folks you don’t see at regular shows. Antibalas’ music has definitely surpassed that of any Fela Kuti-informed contemporary American band I’ve witnessed – with daring improvisations, super-kinetic polyrhythms, stunning breaks, strange harmonics, and, in general, an expansion of the eclectic all-encompassing nature of the Afrobeat genre. Playing primarily for fellow Brooklyn underground rockers when they got going some years ago, this multicultural collective is one of the only acts whose been able to spread out way beyond their community - impressively gaining serious respect and adoration in world beat, funk, and other typically gated sonic communities. Tonight’s performance in Harlem’s Marcus Garvey Park should illustrate the the way in wich Antibalas’ wicked grooves bring everyone together.
