Holy Hail, The Boggs, Color Scheme, Apache Heat - Cake Shop $7

Cake Shop’s Holy Hail-led quadruple bill tonight features a rare appearance by The Boggs.

The Boggs, whose sound found much of their inspiration, as their name implies, in the Harry B. Smith universe of early 20th Century Americana, have, in the years since Jason Friedman was exiled in Berlin, evolved into an electrified band with an Anglophile late 20th Century accent. Beyond the disco punk revival that becomes less and less rapturous each of the last few years, the strong suit of The Boggs, like Liars and a couple of other survivors, is their artful play with world music source materials. Another significance of the 2006 Boggs is the all-star lineup Friedman has assembled: Sam Jane of Love as Laughter, David Lloyd of Cause for Applause, Matt Schultz of Enon, and Heather D’Angleo of Au Revoir Simone. They have a nifty new 12” inch single on Say Hey Records entitled Arm in Arm, which features a remix by Shy Child. A welcomed return.
