August 25

Beirut, Get Him Eat Him, The Harlem Shakes, Curtains - Mercury Lounge $12
Ted Leo and the Pharmacists, DC Snipers - Pier 17, South Street Seaport 7PM FREE

There ain’t much more appropriate for a breezy August evening than Ted Leo and the Pharmacists' feelgood summer hits. While a lot of folks are into the sunny songs, my favorite thing about the band is the tremendous instrumental interplay between three truely exceptional r'n'r stylists. I’ve never seen Leo and his super-snazzy rhythm section of Dave Lerner and Chris Wilson do anything less than play their asses off. But you may have to take some risks here with the 60% chance o/rain and thunderstorms. But they're not paying me to do be a meteorologist. Oh yeah, they're not paying me...

Another relatively inaccessible event that’s perked up my ears tonight is The Curtains opening a sold-out bill with Beirut. Led by the recently departed Deerhoof member Chris Cohen, The Curtains have a new CD entitled Calamity that’s been growing on me of late. Like Deerhoof its strong-suit is the imaginative parts, tones, and arrangements. And, like Deerhoof, the only thing that rubs me a bit raw is the vocals. And, while I’m in the business of comparing the two, I’d definitely select The Curtains and their much more charming recent collection over the recently uber-celebrated Hoof. I also imagine it would be a joy to have their curious multi-dimensional works unfold in front of your eyes.

So it's beginning to look more and more like the unconventional ambient soundscapes of Eyestek along with High Places, Glen Olden, Richard and Jon from Sightings (get a name already dudes) at Tonic and, later, as always every other Friday, the super funky rumpus of the PoNaveNunkRockDeeJayShow at the Southside. Are you with me?
