Dr.
Lonnie Smith Trio – Jazz Standard $20
The turbaned
Hammond B3-professor, Dr.
Lonnie Smith, not to be confused with the equally bad
ass Lonnie Liston Smith, is back at it tonight until Sunday at the
jazz standard. While his music isn’t quite as unusual as his
personal appearance, and his improvisations aren’t as involved
as other B3-masters named Jimmy, Dr. Smith possesses a distinctly
funky and fluid touch. In addition to all kinds of amazing collaborations
particularly with Lou Donaldson, his late-1960s/early-1970s Blue
Note sides are undeniable soul jazz classics that are very easy
to groove to and absorb. I imagine it’ll be as refreshing
as a tall cold gin and tonic on hot summer day like this one.
