Randy Weston
Oscar Peterson – Birdland
$75-$100
Randy Weston – Damrosch Park FREE
Attack of the octogenarian ivory
godz: tonight is a rare opportunity to witness two of the most masterful
musicians to ever sit behind a piano - Oscar
Peterson and Randy
Weston. Both artists, who started out in music during
the 1940s swing to bop transition, were initially R&B and boogie
woogie-based pianists. Peterson quickly became a disciple of Art
Tatum and Weston of Thelonius Monk. Peterson, who cemented is finger-filled
virtuosic style in the early 1950s classic trios consisting of Ray
Brown and Barnie Kessel/Herb Ellis, also loaned his dizzying tickle
to Billy Holiday, Lester Young, Dizzy Gillespie, Ella Fitzgerald,
Count Basie, Ben Webster, Stan Getz, Gene Krupa, and just about
anyone else you can think of during the decade following World War
II. Randy Weston, who eventually became known for his unusual chording
and dynamic compositions as a trio-leader in the same era, was less
busy and more dissonant than Peterson. Whereas Peterson and his
style have remained static, and true to their bop-era form, Weston,
who lived in Morocco for much of the 1960s, has continued to create
sounds as rootless as his lifestyle, exploring many African-based
forms. It’s a true shame that Peterson is an incredibly exploitative
and class-specific $75/$100 ticket… because Weston’s
show is absolutely free. Speaking of which, octogenarian brass legend
Clark Terry is also doing a free show at Riverside Park.... Men
you just don’t meet every day.
