Dinosaur
Jr., Mouthus, Blood on the Wall – Warsaw $20
I’ll
have to admit that, for quite a few years, I was sick of this Dinosaur,
not only for what they turned into, but for the type of bland mid-range
indie-rock guitar fare they influenced. But ya gotta hand it to
‘em. They are unquestionably important and, early on, they
were amazing. As all of you know by now, Jay Mascis' work with Witch
and The Fog has been pretty cool and Murph and Lou Barlow have been
with Dinosaur since alst year's reunion - and, even among the skeptics,
I’ve yet to hear a bad word about the 21st Century lineup.
Speaking of skeptics, there’s gotta be a reason that I never
let go of You’re Living All Over Me and Bug,
when most of the vinyl from that period has long departed my collection
due to either the fact that I could never imagine listening to it
again or that it became too collectable to keep. And the best news
of all is that, apparently, much of the unrestrained feedback blasts
and wild power trio energy that they lost along the way has returned
once more to ballance the band's excellent jaded melodicism.
This show
is particularly recommended because of the excellent choice in NYC
openers: Blood
on the Wall are of course local purveyors of what could
be called a classic indie rock sound and play with total abandon.
Mouthus,
truly the odd man out, adding dimension to this bill, trudge through
dense sludge that is esoteric, abrasive, and primal.
