Spank
Rock, Rod Lee, The Epochs - Bowery Ballroom $15/$18
Now that
the hype has died down a bit, it’s even easier to shamelessly
recommend the mighty Spank
Rock yet again. The product of a few cultural collisions
that wound up marrying the sounds of the Baltimore club scene, underground
hip hop, and DFA, nasty rhymes and funky minimalist beats and artful
analog resonance, the duo's music not only stands formally at the
crossroads of contemporary culture, but remains focused and true
to its function... which is of course, rocking the party. Their
show at McCarren Park Pool had to’ve been the best thing that
happened there all summer. Who else could even dare to follow Gang
Gang Dance – and, additionally, inspire everyone in the place
to shake it like it was 2AM under a threatening overcast afternoon
sky.. They continue to prove themselves a strong contender for the
top party band out there.
