Svenonus v Fellows: Who Will Be the New East Coast DJ Champ?

Ian Svenonius and Mike Fellows, AKA Name Names and DJ Mighty Flashlight

Name Names and Mighy Flashlight – tonight at Beatrice Inn (details and directions)

While I typically recommend shows and not DJ events, tonight is kinda special because it features two of the East Coast’s finest award-winning turntablists. DJ Name Names, AKA Ian Svenonius, briefly dislodged from deep within the bowels of the District of Columbia new rave scene, along with DJ Mighty Flashlight, AKA Mike Fellows, whose been busy as Tommy Sunshine private mash-up tutor, will not only be competing head to head, but also putting on a demonstration of the skills that made these twin baggy pantsers victors in DJ battles from Iceland and Latvia.

Additionally, this night is worthy of note because both artist have, in recent years been promoted from the lowly musician post to the more respectable title of DJ. While Svenonius wasted time in Nation of Ulysses, Cupid Car Club, Make-Up, David Candy, Scene Creamers, Weird War, etc. before getting wise to the fact that rock and roll is for suckas, Fellows played with Rites of Spring, Happy Go Licky, Bonnie Prince Billy, Royal Trux, Silver Jews, etc., before he exchanged two P-basses and mammoth SVT for a decent pair of needles and a first months payment on a super-mega-power-Mac-thingy with the latest DJ programs installed.

Tonight the two will go head to head, exhibiting the baby scratch, the forward and backward scratch, tear scratch, scribble scratch, the chirp scratch, the transformer scratch, flare scratch, crab scratch, orbit scratch, tweak scratch, and, if you’re lucky, euro scratch. Ian will also be debuting his much anticipated mash-up of Nervous Norvus, Lightnin’ Rod, and the Klaxons. Fellows will exhibit his trademark two-feet/two-hand quadro-mix technique that sent a defeated Steve Aoki to the showers at the Hiro Ballroom last month.

And there may be dancing….
