(JAMES) BROWN XMAS SOUL CLAP photos

Photographer JACKIE ROMAN‘S shots of this holiday JAMES BROWN-themed SOUL CLAP & DANCE-OFF! JIMMY HILL AND THE ALLSTARZ BAND got the night started right. This big funky showband features musicians known for their work with Wilson Picket, Clarence Carter, Baby Washington and more. The highlight of their set was two electrifying performances by CHARLES BRADLEY under his BLACK VELVET aka JAMES BROWN JR alter-ego – convincingly singing and dancing his way through some of the GODFATHER’S best with his powerful voice and wild stage moves. Next JONATHAN TOUBIN came out and turned four hours of straight original JAMES BROWN productions on 45 (plus a handful of JB covers). Around 1:30am the usual DANCE-OFF went down. This time special guest JAMES CHANCE, the white James Brown and godfather of No Wave music, selected the contest songs, danced, and played his horn – climaxing at the conclusion of the contest with a full performance of the Contortion’s iconic take on “I Can’t Stand Myself”! Mighty FIne’s Steve Myers helped JT MC and the judges were dancer CLAUDIA DE SERPA SOARES, performer DEE DEE DAME, TV On The Radio’s JALEEL BUNTON, Dirty Three’s JIM R WHITE, world-famous guitar hero MATT SWEENEY, Cartoon Jerk NATE TURBOW, Nothing Changes’ NIKKI SNEAKERS, the official baritone saxophonist of all of NYC PAULA HENDERSON, and legendary Back Door Man PHAST PHREDDIE! As always 1st place got $100 cash and 2nd was a $75 gift certificate at METROPOLIS VINTAGE! Another uncommon New York Night Train party that will not soon be forgotten!

SAT 11/16’S SOUL CLAP & DANCE-OFF PICS W/LA LA BROOKS, REIGNING SOUND, A-BONES W/MICK COLLINS, BLOODSHOT BILL, AND MORE

Photographer JACKIE ROMAN‘S documented this super-special New York Night Train SOUL CLAP & DANCE-OFF. A year ago Hurricane Sandy flooded Norton Records warehouse – destroying hundreds of thousands of records and twenty-five years of work. The NYC/global music community got together at Brooklyn Bowl and elsewhere to wash as many of the soiled records as possible and throw benefits worldwide to help get their beloved label back on its feet. On the one year anniversary of the disaster, the label is currently back and better than ever! The night began with an always incredible performance by Montreal’s wild one-man band Bloodshot BILL. Next the A-Bones took the stage joined by Detroit rock’n’roll legend Mick Collins on guitar for a way out wailin’ boss set! Then La La Brooks of The Crystals got up with Reigning Sound (Official) to do a song off her new Norton solo LP “All or Nothing” and the song she’s best known for “Da Doo Ron Ron”! The musical portion of the night concluded with headliners Reigning Sound throwing down an hour of their majestic hits con gusto! Next JONATHAN TOUBIN got behind the DJ booth to throw down four straight sweaty hours of the finest soul and r&b dance 45s ever made for hundreds of dancers. At 1AM Toubin took a break and got on the mic with Mighty Fine’s STEVE MYERS and BILLY MILLER and MIRIAM LINNA from Norton Records got behind the DJ booth for the monthly DANCE-OFF! The jury included fine artiste AVI SPIVAK, HULA HOOP HARLOT MELISSA ANNE, The Dirtbombs/Gories MICK COLLINS, http://www.youtube.com/user/HulaHoopHarlot), Reigning Sound/Jay-Vons’ MIKEY POST, Daptone Records’ NYDIA DAVILA, Beacon’s Closet’s STEPHANIE WILLIAMS, and our new pal ZOE! The first place winner danced a hole in his pants and walked away with $100 in cash, 2nd place wound up with a $75 Metropolis Vintage shopping spree, and five more contestants got the gift of Norton Records. Then the lights went down and everybody got back down to business of getting down. Long live Norton Records!
