Filmography/Vidography

WIM WENDERS
Wings of Desire ("Der Himmel Uber Berlin")
Road Movies Filmproduktion Gmbh/Argos Films 1988

In this, the last great Wim Wenders film, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds perform in a pivotal scene that marries the plot with music. Just as you hear “The Carny” from the Your Funeral, My Trial album on the trapeze artists’ record player outside of the circus, in the finale you find the Bad Seeds tearing through “From Her to Eternity” live in the scene in which she meets her destiny - an angel who came down to earth for the purpose of experiencing earthly pleasures. While coffee and a cigarette are also on the list, this particular encounter is at the top. This version of “From Her to Eternity” gives the original a run for its money and features some of the best Blixa Bargeld/Kid Congo Powers dual-guitar work you are likely to find anywhere.

Listen to Kid talk about filming "Wings of Desire" and re-recording "From Her to Eternity".

THE FALL
"Hit the North" video
VHS8489

Beggars Banquet 1988

El Kid doesn’t play on this one but he stars in the video. Lucky for you it’s still in print – I think.

KINGS OF INDEPENDENCE (1989)

This video possesses a hilarious title. Inside you will find live clips by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Crime and the City Solution, and Swans. I’m not really sure what they are independent of - or how they have become the rulers over this particular autonomy – but all three "kings" are of course some of the greats. Kid plays with the Bad Seeds on “Saint Huck” and “Stranger Than Kindness”

KID CONGO POWERS
"La Historia de Un Amour"
Snub TV Vol 2

Virgin Music Video 1991

I don’t know where you’ll find this, but they made a video for “La Historia de Un Amour” from Kid’s first solo EP In the Heat of the Night and they compiled it here.

NICK CAVE AND THE BAD SEEDS
The Road To God Knows Where
Mutefilm/Atavistic, 1991

If you’re reading this, you’ve probably already seen Uli Schuppel's classic documentary. I haven’t seen this one for some time, but I remember Nick Cave on the bus drinking diet root beer, reading reviews, and playing John Lee Hooker songs. In particular I recall an amazing fan letter from a woman who sits alone and listens to Tammy Wynette (and lives in apartment number 9?). There’s backstage footage which include a visit from Lydia Lunch and Jim Thirwell. There’s a heated argument with a promoter about a sound system. Finally, there’s also great live footage - most of which is all-to-short an wets your appetite for more. There's also an acoustic version of “The Mercy Seat.”

DIE HAUT
Sweat
XXX/WSFA 1993

German collaborating instrumental group Die Haut filmed a video of their live album Sweat - except that the video was recorded at another venue in Berlin the same month and has a slightly different set. This time the guest vocalists are Nick Cave, Anita Lane, Lydia Lunch, Blixa Bargeld, Alex Hacke, and Kid Congo Powers. Kid kicks off the video singing “(You Seen) Angel Jesus?”, one of his vocal tracks from 1988’s Headless Body in Topless Bar, and “In The Heat Of The Night” from his solo EP that shares the same name. He appears once more for the grande finale with the rest of the cast for The Stooges“Little Doll.”

THE GUN CLUB
PREACHIN' THE BLUES
UK Video Visionary 1995

This is one of the many excellent live videos filmed at the legendary Hacienda in Manchester (check out others by The Birthday Party and The Fall). This is the Las Vegas Story lineup with Pierce, Powers, Patricia Morrison, and Terry Graham – a bona-fide supergroup if you ask me. The band goes through a fine sampling of the repertoire up to this point – from “Sex Beat,” “Fire of Love,” “Preachin’ the Blues,” and “Goodbye Johnny” to the Miami and Las Vegas Story classics.

MAKE-UP
Blue is Beautiful
directed by James Schneider/Dischord 1998

In what director James Schneider calls a combination of "an experimental documentary and just a rock movie," he captures Make-Up on the road in 1997. You will find Kid here as well - touring as the percussionist in with this incredible and much-missed band.

NICK CAVE AND THE BAD SEEDS
The Videos (1998)
Mute, MF030

Kid Congo Powers appears in this collection of Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds' highly stylized music videos. He plays and sings backup on "Deanna, "The Weeping Song," and "The Ship Song."
